Palasyo ni Valentin

Palasyo ni Valentin won the 1st prize in the 1998 Philippine Centennial Commission Publication’s Committee’s Centennial Literary Composition (Sarsuela Division).
A story about self-reflection in time and in history, set in 1941, Palasyo ni Valentin is a memory play that follows the story of Valentin, an old caretaker and film operator residing in an antiquated theater, who revives his eventful past through alcohol reflecting the development of the theater during the Spanish to American era of the Philippines.

Back in 1896, Palacio was full of life brought by staging of zarzuelas. Valentin played the piano in the orchestra, and Diding, his love, was the singer made famous by the Spanish director, Senior Alfonso. Because of anger and jealousy, Senior Alfonso imprisoned Valentin. Vaudeville was the trend when Valentin was released. He settled at Palacio until films became the new trend.
