Jazz in Love by Filmmaker Baby Ruth Villarama @ UP Cine Adarna
After
receiving accolades at the 2013 Cinemalaya and at international film
festivals, the documentary Jazz in Love by filmmaker Baby Ruth Villarama
will be shown at the University of the Philippines Cine Adarna in
Diliman, QC, on February 13(Thursday) and 14 (Friday). Screening times
on both dates are 4 pm, 5:30 pm and 7 pm.
Jazz in Love follows the story of 22-year old Davaoeño Ernesto “Jazz”
Tigaldao who must pass a Deutsch-language test so he could marry
56-year old German Theodor Rutkowski. The docu tells of how the two gays
met on Facebook, their courtship of 11 months, Jazz’s dreams of donning
a gown at their wedding and living in Germany, and Theodor’s trip to
Davao to ask the blessings of the Tigaldo family who has not accepted
Jazz’s homosexuality.
The film was the first documentary to open the prestigious Cinemalaya
Independent Film Festival where it premiered last year. It competed at
the 18th Busan International Film Festival in Korea last October, and
won the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Award at the
1st Sala Mindanaw International Film Festival last November.
Jazz in Love has received acclaim for its heartfelt representation of
same-sex love as no different from heterosexual love. Writer Ibarra
Mateo described it as “valiant.” Skilty Labastilla of the Young Critics
Circle praised it saying the film is “tightly edited” and “lyrically
shot.” Tito Valiente of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino said, “The
documentary works because it proceeds from sincerity, rather than mere
curiosity.” While film critic Oggs Cruz of twitchfilm.com hailed it
saying, “Jazz in Love has all the trappings of a perfect love story.”
The director Babyruth Villarama is a foreign correspondent involved
in documentary and HD production the Philippines and ASEAN region. She
champions social issues through her venture Voyage Film Studios. Some of
her works include the internationally acclaimed features Busong, Halaw
and Sampaguita, the National Geographic docu Asia’s Titanic, and the
documentary Harana. Jazz in Love is Villarama’s first independent documentary film.
Ticket price is Php 100.00 Screening at the 800-seater Cine Adarna is on
a first come, first served basis.
