Spring Festival: Asian Music Concert

To celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Wooden Horse 2014, the Department of Musicology of the University of the Philippines College of Music is presenting an Asian Music Concert titled "Spring Festival" on 6 February 2014, 6:30 PM at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium, Quezon City.

The concert features the student resident musical group of the Department of Musicology named TUGMA or Tugtugang Musika Asyatika, which specializes in traditional musics of Asia. The group is mentored by Dr. Verne de la Pena and by teachers of the musicology department, who will play with TUGMA in the event.

The concert will start with Chinese music ensemble under the direction of Mr. Vicente Ongsiako, playing popular pieces such as "Kung Hei Fat Choi," "White Leopard," "August Lotus," "Horse Racing," Draw Heart," and "Green Rose." Guest flutist from China Samson Tiu will mark this section. Chinese music will be followed by minyo (folk) songs, particularly the arirang type ("Gyeonggi," "Milyang," and "Jindo") from Korea . These songs are taught by Ms. Oh Mihyun. Improvisation on "Raga Bhimpalasi" on the sitar by Mr. Jose Valenciano with guest tabla player Mr. Charanjit Wasu from India will follow the Korean numbers and Indian music in turn will lead to Philippine music such as ambahan (chant) from Mindoro Island and binanog dances (female and male styles)from Panay Bukidnon.

The second part of the program consists of gamelan music from Central Java to be led by Assistant Professor Lilymae Montano playing with her students the pieces "Ladrang Turunsih" (Laras Pelog Patet Lima), "Ladrang Wilujeng" (Pelog Barang), "Lancaran Singanebah" (Ladrang Bima Kurda Laras Pelog Patet Barang). These numbers will be followed by varied kulintangan musics from Southern Philippines some of which will have accompanying patterned bodily movements such as "Sinulog a Bagul" (with pangalay) and "Tidtu" (with Silat). Korean samulnori (drum) ensemble follows afterwards, rendering pieces "Samdo Seoljango" and "Honam Udo Karak." The concert will end with fusion music.

Admission ticket to the Spring Festival concert on February 6 concert is Php150. Students with valid IDs are entitled to 50 percent discount and senior citizens, 20%.
