Prima
ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde is dancing her last performances of The
Nutcracker to cap the third and final year of her Swan Song Series. The
series is her farewell to her favorite full-length classics.
Swan Song Series showdates of The Nutcracker are on November 29 at
7:30 p.m., December 1 at 3 p.m., and December 8 at 3 p.m., at the Aliw
Theater, CCP Complex, Pasay City. Also featured are Ballet Manila and
the Manila Symphony Orchestra under the baton of guest conductor,
Maestro Alexander Vikulov.
In this season of sharing, Macuja-Elizalde has announced that all
ticket proceeds from her Swan Song Series shows this year will be
donated to typhoon relief efforts.
The Nutcracker is a spectacular production that has delighted
families the world over, making it a Christmas staple for many ballet
companies. It is about a young girl named Masha whose generous spirit on
Christmas Eve transports her to a magical land of dancing dolls, giant
rats, a nutcracker who turns into a prince and the glamorous Sugar Plum
Fairy.
For Macuja-Elizalde, The Nutcracker is special as it was in this
ballet that she made her debut on the Russian stage. In 1984, she was
cast as Masha for the student performances of The Nutcracker as given by
the Russian Ballet Academy at the Marinsky Theater. Her debut was
unprecedented as she was the very first foreign student ever given the
chance to perform the lead role.
“There's really something magical about The Nutcracker. You just get
caught up in the music of Tchaikovsky and in the story as its many
enchanting scenes happen onstage,” enthuses Macuja-Elizalde.
She performs anew with daughter Missy Macuja-Elizalde as Little Masha
on November 29 and December 1. Ballet Manila scholar Jessa Balote will
dance as Little Masha in the December 8 fundraiser for the Philippine
Christian Foundation which runs the school in Tondo where Jessa is an
honor student. Proceeds from this last performance will be used to
establish an arts and dance center in Smokey Mountain.
Meanwhile, Ballet Manila will also have performances of The
Nutcracker on November 29, 30, and December 1, 6, 7 and 8, also at Aliw
Theater. With music by Peter Tchaikovsky and choreography by Vassily
Vainonen, it is being restaged by Osias Barroso Jr., Eileen Lopez and
Jonathan Janolo.
Ballet Manila principal dancer Mylene Aggabao-Salgado and senior
soloist Dawna Mangahas alternate as the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Nutcracker
cast also includes Rudy De Dios and Junmark Sumaylo (Nutcracker
Prince), Alfren Salgado, Romeo Peralta, Glenn Ragel, Elpidio Magat and
Manny Febra (Cavaliers), Marcus Tolentino (Drosselmeyer), Alvin Santos
and Anselmo Dictado (Fritz), Gerardo Francisco and Roduardo Ma
(Harlequin Doll), Mylene Aggabao-Salgado (Columbine) and Sergio Capa
(Moor).
