The
Broadway musical phenomenon WICKED is set to cast its spell over
Filipino audiences when it opens on January 22, 2014. Presented by VISA
and SMART Infinity, WICKED will play for a strictly limited season at
the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Winner of 50 major awards including a Grammy®, 3 Tony Awards®, and 6
Helpmann Awards, WICKED will celebrate its 10th Anniversary on Broadway
this October. The musical has been Broadway’s #1 show for an
unprecedented nine consecutive years and has thrilled over 37 million
audience members worldwide over the last decade.

WICKED is a brilliant re-imagining of the stories and characters
created by L. Frank Baum in “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. It is the
untold tale of the Witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two
other girls meet in the Land of Oz. One, born with emerald green skin,
is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and
very popular. WICKED tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how
these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West
and Glinda the Good.

The extraordinary musical features a dazzling display of glitz, glamour, and spell-binding special effects. Every little detail comes together to conjure the fantastic world of Oz for audiences – from 200 costumes designed by Tony Award® winner Susan Hilferty, with some cast members making up to eight costume changes, to a set by Tony Award® winner Eugene Lee that features a myriad of moving parts and stunning flying effects.

Currently approaching its 10th Anniversary on Broadway, WICKED’s North American and international companies have cumulatively grossed over US$3 billion. WICKED has been seen by over 7 million people at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway since it first opened in October 2003, and has repeatedly broken box office records, regularly grossing in excess ofUS$1.8million a week.

WICKED also holds the record for the highest grossing week in
London’s West End where it is approaching its 8th triumphant year, as
well as in the North American touring market. It also set new record
highs in Tokyo and Stuttgart, and in Australia, where it was seen by
over 1.5 million people during the three-year tour.
Manila audiences will be treated to unbelievable performances by
top-class Australian entertainers Jemma Rix and Suzie Mathers, who play
the leading ladies Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. Rix garnered a
Helpmann Award nomination in 2011 for Best Leading Actress in a Musical
for her turn as Elphaba, while Mathers was nominated as Best Newcomer at
the 2009 Sydney Theatre Awards.

The production will also feature some of the top stage performers
from Australia and New Zealand, including Jay Laga’aia, Maggie
Kirkpatrick, Steve Danielsen, Glen Hogstrom, Emily Cascarino and Edward
Grey.
“As WICKED prepares to celebrate its 10th Anniversary on Broadway, we
are very excited to add Manila to the long list of international cities
that have welcomed the show,” said WICKED producers Marc Platt and
David Stone. “We trust that audiences there will embrace and celebrate
its powerful storytelling and universal themes as warmly as those in
North America, the U.K., Japan, Germany, Holland, and Australia.”
“It is a privilege to present WICKED in Manila,” said producer James
Cundall, CEO of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions and presenter of WICKED
in Manila. “It is a unique musical created for 21st Century audiences,
which I know will warm the hearts of Filipino theatre-goers.” Lunchbox
Theatrical Productions has brought a number of major productions to
Manila including Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, and Mamma Mia!
Bambi Rivera-Verzo, Executive Producer of Concertus Manila shared,
“When WICKED premiered in Singapore in 2011, a lot of Filipinos flew
there to catch the show, and that’s a good indicator of how ready local
theatre audiences are for WICKED to cast its spell in Manila.
”Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED features music and
lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Academy Award winner for
Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt) and a book by Winnie Holzman (My
So-Called Life, Once and Again, and thirtysomething). The production
features musical staging by Wayne Cliento and is directed by Lisa
Leguillou, based on the original direction by Joe Mantello.
WICKED is guaranteed to leave both young and old Filipino
theatre-goers spellbound with a story that tugs at the heartstrings, and
features spectacular costumes, thrilling technical wizardry, and a
phenomenal musical score that will keep audiences coming back for more!
