Sala sa Init Sala sa Lamig by Don M. Salubayba

The UP Vargas Museum opens Don M. Salubayba’s exhibition titled Sala sa Init Sala sa Lamig on October 23, Wednesday, 4PM at the Lobby and West Wing Gallery of the museum.

This expression also alludes to the volatile environment of the country, both literally and figuratively: a tropical weather on the one hand, and on the other, a political culture sustained by accommodation and largesse.

An Evening of Bel Canto : The Art of Beautiful Singing

Bel Canto which literally means "The Art of Beautiful Singing" is a vocal fad made popular during the late 17th century that requires singers to possess incredible virtuosic vocal technique and impeccable musicality.

Composers such as Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti wrote music with limpid melodic lines that would encompass a singer's whole vocal range with a lot of ornate embellishments. Operas like I Puritani, La Sonnambula, Norma, Lucia di Lammermoor are some of the well-known bel canto opera.

1st Philippine Ukulele Festival @ SM Mall of Asia Music Hall

While stringed instruments are famous amongst Filipino music lovers, the ukulele is seldom played in the country due to its scarcity. Music stores in the Philippines offer limited options for ukulele enthusiasts; most of the time, only the basic types of ukulele are sold and only one or two brands are carried by selected stores, leaving customers frustrated.

Thus, the country’s first all-ukulele shop was born. Having opened last November 2012 at The Collective in Makati City, Ukulele Philippines not only offers high-quality instruments, but it also gives every Filipino the opportunity to appreciate and create wonderful music using this beautiful 19th century piece of art.

The distinctive sound of Libera has travelled the world in the last few years. The group's albums have topped both mainstream and classical charts in many countries, and their recordings hold their place in top-tens alongside major artists like Bocelli.

The boys who make up the vocal band Libera have been described as “normal” and “ordinary”. However, as their recordings and performances demonstrate, the music they produce is truly extraordinary. With shimmering, mystical chords and ecstatic harmonies, they are unlike any other group you have ever heard. These are truly sounds to lift the soul. Celestial sounds for a new time.

Ang Bagong Harana - A Musical Journey Every Filipino Should Take

Mounting a show like this is an act of faith. All around, the commercial theater and concert scene is full of imports, both the ideas and the actual productions. When we at the Philippine Opera Company decided to make a tradition of our Harana series, we said to ourselves “This is going to be a tough job. But we want to do it because we need to be reminded of how beautiful our music is, and how much our souls can be enriched by hearing these sung again.

So, with a cast of ten dedicated singers, plus the members of the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, we set out creating the production. The stirring arrangements of multi awarded arrangers were more than enough basis for the staging and the choreography. As the production took shape, we felt more and more inspired and encouraged by the over-all picture that we were painting for an audience: a picture of an Age of Innocence that we Filipinos so badly need to return to.
