Tangahalang Ateneo Presents Ang Bakkhai

Tanghalang Ateneo celebrates its 35th Season by staging four classic Greek plays with a contemporary edge -- a season that company members call Reimagining the Greeks.
The first of the four plays, Ang Oresteyas, recently ended a sold-out run to rave reviews, while the second of the series, Ang Bakkhai (The Bacchae)by Euripides, is waiting at the wings to unleash its force this September.

Ang Bakkhai tells a tale of divine revenge against mortals. The Greek god Dionysus, son of Zeus, returns to Thebes after a three-year absence to punish its officials for maltreating his mother and denying him proper worship. Dionysius comes disguised as a stranger and with him is a band of bacchants, freedom-loving women, who help Dionysius lure the crafty Theban king to his end. Tanghalang Ateneo's version will see the play from the perspective of young people, and will point to the need for balance between control and freedom in one’s personal and social life.

Tanghalang Ateneo’s Ang Bakkhai will showcase the newcomers of the company to the life in the theatre. The setup is simple: If a batch of new actors are placed in a costume room and are given the script of Ang Bakkhai, what will they do and how will they do it? As such, from the staging to the production design, it will be continuous workshop wherein the assumptions of the stage as well as the chemistry of motions and emotions will be defined.
Acclaimed director JK Anicoche of Sipat Lawin Ensemble, first time assistant director Jay Caluag and production designer Leeroy New will work for the first time with Tanghalang Ateneo. With Guelan Luarca’s Filipino adaptation and contemplations on Euripedes’ The Bacchae, Tanghalang Ateneo’s production of Ang Bakkhai will not only be a celebration of theatre, but will also seek to provide a commentary of theatre and its excesses by seeing the theatre with fresh eyes.

Ang Bakkhai will go onstage this coming September 12 - 14 and 18 – 21, 2013 at the Black Box, Fine Arts Annex, Ateneo de Manila University.
