Giselle @ the CCP Main Theater

Her story is a familiar one. Two men are in love with her, but she returns the affections of the one who turns out to be taken. Her heartbreak kills her (literally), and yet she forgives her lover.
In a medium like ballet where spectacle often takes the spotlight, such drama and conflict is seldom found. Everyone has a story to tell in “Giselle”. The choreography and the music, not to mention the dancers, all help to create well-rounded and relatable characters. 

The naïve Giselle falls for the suave newcomer, Albrecht. Hilarion, the typical boy-next-door, continues to pine for her. She chooses to disregard the latter’s warnings against the former even though she has her own suspicions. The revelation that he is already engaged to be married proves to be too much for her frail body to take.

After dying of a broken heart, Giselle joins the ranks of the Wilis, spirits of women who have been jilted and passed away before their wedding day. Their cold and hardhearted queen, Myrtha orders that all the men who wander into their midst be forced to dance to their death. It is Giselle’s forgiveness that ultimately saves Albrecht’s life.

There is a common misconception that ballets are old-fashioned and boring, but “Giselle” shows us that they are as filled with entertainment and drama as any other story. The title role is one of the most difficult and exciting roles for a ballerina, as it requires extraordinary grace, technique, and above all, dramatic ability.

What lies at the very heart of this ballet is its story. That is what sets it apart from all the rest. Its message and the emotion it conveys have the power to move an audience to tears. While other ballets may be remembered for a particularly fantastic movement, “Giselle” will be remembered by how it made people feel. 

This ballet is restaged by none other than the Philippines’ premier danseur, Nonoy Froilan. By piecing together elements from different productions, he breathes new life into the timeless classic. His vision is realized by a mix of new and familiar faces. Katherine Trofeo, Carissa Adea and Denise Parungao alternate as Giselle, and Jean Marc Cordero, Richardson Yadao and Earl John Arisola play Albrecht. All being new to the roles, they bring their own personalities into the performance. 

Several world-famous ballerinas have portrayed the title role for Ballet Philippines on the CCP stage, such as Natalia Makarova, Yoko Morishita, Anna Villadolid and Maniya Barredo. Notable Albrechts include Nonoy Froilan, Patrick Bissell, Olivier Muñoz, and Brando Miranda. This is BP’s sixth restaging of the classic. The most recent production in 1999 featured Toni Lopez Gonzalez alternating with Lisa Macuja-Elizalde and Cecile Sicangco. Jose Manuel Carreño and Osias Barroso portrayed Albrecht opposite them.

“Giselle” is the first show in Ballet Philippines’ 44th season, entitled “IllumiNATION”. In September, the story of valiant Andres Bonifacio will be given a modern twist in “Rock Supremo”. Edna-Vida Froilan will transform Charles Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol” into a new multimedia storybook ballet in December. The season will draw to a close in February with “The Art of Dance”, a mixed bill featuring old and new works. 

“Giselle” will run from August 16-18, 2013 at the CCP Main Theater. The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra will be featured on August 16, 8PM and August 17, 6PM, conducted by their musical director, Olivier Ochanine.
