COMPETITION CATEGORIES
The Folk Music category
highlights the folk music of one’s country and region, with each of
the participating choirs, whether foreign or local, rendering a
Filipino folk song.
The Chamber Choir category
is the most challenging category in the Competiton. Each of the choirs
are required to render choral works specific to particular musical
styles: one (1) from the Renaissance or Early Baroque Period, one (1)
from the Romantic Period, and (1) from the 20th to the 21st Century. In addition to the three required choral works is obligatory piece Three Kalingga Chants, a newly commissioned work for the Festival, written by noted Filipino composer Nilo Alcala.
The Vocal Ensemble category
will see the choirs perform freely chosen works. Each choir is free to
sing choral pieces in any particular style except folk music. The
point of interest in this category is that the maximum number of singers
is only 12.
