Bridge to the Future - The Philippines and Japan Friendship Concert @ UP

The University of the Philippines College of Music and the KTCM Music Education Laboratory Foundation, in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines and the Japanese Embassy of Commerce and Industry in the Philippines will present a memorable collaborative concert titled "Bridge to the Future" on August 8, 2013, 6:30 pm at the AbelardoHall Auditorium in UP Diliman, Quezon City. The concert is part of the "Towards AHA@50 Concert Series,” 1st semester 2013-2014.

The friendship concert will feature noted visiting Japanese artists sopranos Satsuki Hayashida and Ayano Kumada, internationally acclaimed pianist Naoko Matsuoka, and folk artist Tatsuya Hosono on tsugaru shamisen. They will be joined by teachers of the College pianist Carolyn Cheng and bass Rainier Arthur Cruz.

An interesting repertoire awaits concert goers of this event as the six artists take turn to render solos such as Kozaburo Hirai's Sakura Fantasia by Matsuoka, duets such as Rentaro Taki's Kojo no tsuki (Cruz, Matsuoka) and Teiichi Okano's Oboro zukiyo (Cruz, Matsuoka), and trios such as Sakura Sakura by Kumada, Hosono, and Matsuoka. This piece caps the first part of the program with Hosono playing on tsugaru shamisen before it Jonkara-Bushi and Otemoyan.
The second part of the program begins with music by international composers such as Mozart's Sonata for 2 pianos K.448 D Major (Matsuoka and Cheng); Bartok's Six Romanian Folk Dances (Cheng), and Chopin's Fantasy Impromptu (Matsuoka). This will be followed by numbers where both Japanese and Filipino artists interpret Filipino folk tunes such as Ating cupung Singsing (arranged by Espino), Chitchiritsit, and Pobreng Alindahaw; immortal kundimans 'Nasaan ka Irog" and “Anak Dalita"; Abelardo's danza "Bituing Marikit"; and ditty songs Kataka-taka and Pandangguhan.

Tickets to the show are priced at PhP200 with special discounts for students and the elderly.
