Bridge to the Future - The Philippines and Japan Friendship Concert @ UP


The University of the Philippines College of Music and the KTCM Music Education Laboratory Foundation, in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines and the Japanese Embassy of Commerce and Industry in the Philippines will present a memorable collaborative concert titled "Bridge to the Future" on August 8, 2013, 6:30 pm at the AbelardoHall Auditorium in UP Diliman, Quezon City. The concert is part of the "Towards AHA@50 Concert Series,” 1st semester 2013-2014.

Gantimpala Theater Presents Florante at Laura

Ballet Manila Presents Lola Basyang


Ballet Manila presents three new enchanting tales from Philippine literature's most iconic storyteller when it opens its 18th season next month with Tatlo Pang Kuwento ni Lola Basyang.

This is the much-awaited follow-up to its all-Filipino extravaganza Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang which premiered in 2008 and has since become a blockbuster seen by over a hundred thousand viewers.

A New Theater Company To Watch - Red Turnip Theater


Five actors. Five friends. Today, Topper Fabregas, Jenny Jamora, Ana Abad Santos, Cris Villonco, and Rem Zamora together announced the formation of their new theater company: Red Turnip Theater

“It’s an idea we’ve been talking about off and on the past three years,” Zamora said. “We were beginning to notice that not many productions of contemporary, straight plays were being staged. We love musicals but don’t want to see the straight play go away. So we thought, why not just do it ourselves?” The company pools together the talents and experience of the five performers, who have received acclaim for their performances and, in Zamora and Abad Santos’ case, their work as directors.

Katy! The Musical Rerun


Actress-singer Isay Alvarez leads the cast in Spotlight Artists Centre’s revival production of the iconic Filipino musical, “Katy” at the Cultural Center of the Philippines from July 26 - August 4 at Meralco Theater.

The musical, which is based on the life of Bodabil Queen Katy de la Cruz, also features Tirso Cruz III, Dulce, Lou Veloso, Gian Magdangal, Tricia Amper-Jimenez and Epi Quizon in special roles. Nestor Torre directs, with music by Ryan Cayabyab, story and libretto by Jose Javier Reyes.

Fifty Years of Korean Contemporary Printmaking Exhibit @ the Metropolitan Museum of Manila


 
The Korea Foundation, in cooperation with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (MMCA) and the Metropolitan Museum Manila launches the “Fifty Years of Korean Contemporary Printmaking” exhibit on August 1, 2013.

The exhibit is part of the ongoing 2013 Korea Festival in ASEAN.

The exhibit, which previously had its run in Indonesia, consists of 81 works sourced from MMCA from varied periods, starting from the 1950s down to the 1990s in an effort to introduce the history of Korean Printmaking tradition to the Filipinos.

Scriptwriting Contest for Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival 2013

 
The Film Development Council of the Philippines calls for entries to its nationwide scriptwriting contest in connection with Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival for June 2014. The festival focuses on ‘genre’ filmmaking with 12 entries exploring the possibilities of an entire spectrum of cinematic types with vast domestic and global appeal. The genres included are confined to: action, comedy, fantasy, horror, thriller, futuristic and a hybrid of any two or three.

Kapeng Barako Club is  a 2010 Palanca-Award Winning Play written and directed by Juan Ekis. It tells us a story about a group of friends and their bitter love life. Kapeng Barako Club: Samahan ng mga Bitter?" will be staged at Telengtan Hall, 5/F ACB, University of Asia and the Pacific, Pearl Drive, Ortigas Center, Pasig City. BADONG: Salvador Bernal Designs the Stage




The Cultural Center of the Philippines honors the late Salvador F. Bernal, National Artist for Theater Design, in a retrospective exhibit that highlights his various design projects in ballet, opera, theater, and film from the 1970s until the time of his passing in 2011.

BADONG Salvador Bernal Designs the Stage will be held at the Bulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery), which has been transformed into a veritable black box, and at the Pasilyo Guillermo Tolentino and Pasilyo Juan Luna (the 3rd floor hallway galleries). 

Jazz In Love @ the CCP


Baby Ruth Villarama’s Jazz in Love will open the 9th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition on July 26, 2013 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Jazz in Love, based on a true story, is about Jazz, a gay Pinoy, who prepares for the visit of his German boyfriend by taking the qualifying language exam at the Goethe Institut for fiancées who plan to apply for a visa to Germany.  The film presents a portrait of a couple very much in love. The German visitor, though, is overwhelmed by Philippine realities that may not end happily for Jazz.

NECROLOGICAL RITES FOR LATE NATIONAL ARTIST ANDREA VENERACION AT CCP


 
The late National Artist for Music Arts Andrea O. Veneracion was given a tribute by family and friends in a necrological ceremony held on July 14 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater), followed by an interment held at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Veneracion died on July 9, 2013 at the age of 84.

National Artist for Music Andrea O. Veneracion Passed Away


National Artist for Music Andrea Veneracion, 85

National Artist for Music Andrea O. Veneracion, 85, passed away Tuesday evening, Cultural Center of the Philippines vice-president and artistic director Chris Millado told INQUIRER.net shortly after Wednesday midnight. 

“Tita Andy had been comatose for many years,” Millado said.
Veneracion was founder and former choirmaster of the world-acclaimed Philippine Madrigal Singers or Madz. She founded Madz in 1963. 

Her death came just a month before the CCP is about to hold the first Andrea Veneracion International Choral Festival.

In July 2013, Philippine Stagers Foundation (PSF), the theatre company that brought three BroadwayWorld.com (BWW) Philippines awards for their banner 2012 season production, will bring a new musical titled ‘Bonifacio: Isang Sarswela’.

The said presentation is written and directed by Vincent M. Tañada and is in commemoration of the 150thbirth anniversary of one of the brave heroes of Philippine history—Andres Bonifacio y de Castro (30 November 1863 – 10 May 1897).
