2013 Music News Intimate Concert Series Concert 1: Noel Azcona

Baritone Noel Azcona, flutist John Raymond Sarreal and pianist Najib Ismail headline the resumption of Music News’ Intimate Concert Series at the UP Abelardo Hall, Diliman, Quezon City, on April 20, 7 p.m.
The program includes Bach’s “Bist du bei Mir,” Carissimi’s “Vittoria mio core,” Jacques Ibert’s “Four Songs,” Liszt’s “Benedetto Sia il Giorno,” Schoenberg’s “Stars” (from Les Miserables), Abelardo’s “Magbalik Ka Hirang,” Mozart’s “Hai Gia vinta la causa.. Vedro M'entrio sospiro” (from Le Nozze di Figaro), Tchaikovsky’s “Ja vas lyub lyu (from Pique Dame) and the “Toreador Song” from Carmen.

Wrote writer-journalist Nestor Mata (himself a baritone) of one of Azcona's performances: “Noel Azcona exhibited his musical sophistication in singing nine operatic arias and Broadway songs. He ended his song recital with the singingof Sondheim’s ‘Anyone Can Whistle’ and ‘Wheels of a Dream’ from Ragtime) together with the internationally acclaimed UST Singers.

When the appreciative audience rewarded him with a standing ovation and cries for encore, Noel sang Lenski’s aria from Eugene Onegin and ‘Iyo Kailan Pa Man’ by Angel Pena.”
