“The Garden" - Open Air Exhibit by Denis Lagdameo and Olivia d’Aboville

Bonifacio Global City (BGC) Offsite Gallery has been transformed into a whimsical garden as Bonifacio Art Foundation Inc. unveiled its third open-air exhibit called, “The Garden” by Denis Lagdameo and Olivia d’Aboville.
Inspired by wild flora, “The Garden” features a variety of plant and flower-looking pieces made of recyclable materials that come in different colors, shapes, and sizes. Passersby admire the colorful installations especially at night when they are lit.

“We wanted to create a nice, serene place where people can hang out. ‘The Garden’ is based from our previous works - my murals and Olivia’s light flowers were combined,” Lagdameo explained.

“With this exhibit, we tried to play with colors so anyone can be attracted to it. We wanted to play with lighting and combine spiky elements and round objects. The contrast of pieces on the lower ground and the taller installations turned out nice as well,” d’Aboville added.

“The Garden” was created using recyclable materials that can be transformed into new artworks after the exhibit period. Lagdameo’s art installations are made up of PVC pipes and d’Aboville’s light flowers are made of cocktail stirrers.

“I recycle as much as I can. I used 80,000 cocktail stirrers to make the light flowers with the help of five nanays from Gawad Kalinga in Bulacan. Originally, these pieces were used in an exhibit in Singapore,” revealed D’Aboville.

Lagdameo related that his installations in “The Garden” will be transformed into other art pieces for his next project. He said, “I’ll use the PVC pipes and other materials after this exhibit so they won’t be wasted.”

“The Garden” also uses energy-saving lighting products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Young contemporary artists

Lagdameo, a multimedia and installation artist, graduated from the UP College of Fine Arts BFA in Sculpture. His artworks have been presented here and abroad. His recent exhibitions include Malasimbo Music and Arts Festival in Puerto Galera and Fete de la WSK at Light and Space Contemporary. His 13th one-man exhibition, The Three Point Entrance, was held at The Picasso Boutique Residences.

D’Aboville is a French-Filipino artist who graduated from École Supérieure d’Art Françoise Conte in Paris. She has been invited to exhibit in museums, galleries, hotels and festivals in France, Hong Kong, Singapore, and U.S.A. She uses ordinary mass-produced objects like plastic spoons and bottles to avoid polluting the environment.
