Museum of Contemporary Art and Design Film Showing

In celebration of Women’s Month, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde will show the films of Ariani Darmawan every Friday, 12noon-1:30pm at MCAD office beginning March 8. Seats limited.
Darmawan’s short films will be the focus, and these include The Anniversaries (2006), It’s Almost There (2001), Still Life (2006), City of Desire (2000) and Silenced (2004). Total running time is 53 minutes and 4 seconds.

Part of MCAD Platforms, the Film Showing offers MCAD’s audiences a chance to see various developments in the contemporary culture of images. These developments include use of the cinematographic language to create different audio-visual forms and practices that draw on the concerns and explorations of the featured artists.

Ariani Darmawan is a video artist/filmmaker who works in Bandung, Indonesia. She has a degree in architecture from the Parahyangan Catholic University in Bandung and a Fine Arts degree from the Art Institute of Chicago. Participant in various art exhibitions and film festivals in Europe, North America and Asia, Ms Darmawan also has a production company called Kineruku Productions and is part of the artist initiative called Video Babes.

Anniversaries are marked by scenes in an elevator that provide a portrait of the relationship between a husband and wife. It’s Almost There has the question “Do you know what the form of the world is” answered directly and indirectly by the female persona journeying through Indonesia, her homeland. Still Life is set like a Dutch painting and four women of different nationalities fighting (literally) over their dignities. City of Desire is an interpretation of Italo “Calvino’s Zobeide”, a tale of a city where the inhabitants constantly build their places upon their dreams. Silenced presents a video performance of a young girl with a book.
