Tribute To The Thomasians at the CCP

The UST Conservatory of Music in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines presents the UST Symphony Orchestra with classical artists, all alumni of the UST, in a concert entitled Tribute to the Thomasians.
Tenors Lemuel Dela Cruz, Eugene Delos Santos, Randy Gilongo, and Ronan Ferrer, bass Jun Francis Jaranilla will be the soloists for the pieces “Stout-Hearted Men” from New Moon by Sigmund Romberg and “Nessun Dorma” from Turandot by Giacomo Puccini while viola player Joy Allan dela Cruz will be the soloist for Viola Concerto in G minor by Cecil Forsyth. Also in the program is Giuseppe Verdi’s Overture to Nabucco. The Orchestra is also performing Symphony no.5 in C minor, op.67 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Founded in 1927 by Dr. Manuel Casas of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, the UST Symphony Orchestra has produced many musicians, some of whom have become the country’s leading artists. Presently, the Orchestra is comprised of 70 student-members, including winners of national music competitions, participants of foreign youth orchestras and scholars of important music schools abroad.

The UST Symphony Orchestra is the official orchestra of the University of Sto. Tomas and an important part of the UST Conservatory of Music.

The UST Symphony Orchestra is a resident performing group of the CCP which subsidizes its training program. It holds regular concerts at the CCP and participates in the CCP Outreach and Exchange program. It also serves as a pool for additional players as the needs of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra dictate.

"The UST Symphony Orchestra is one of the valuable assets of the UST Conservatory of Music, serving not only the liturgical and ceremonial needs of the University but also training future orchestral and band musicians as well as conductors through the opportunities of performance and recognition," CCP President Raul M. Sunico said. "As a resident orchestra of the CCP, it is also a constant source of new memberships in the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra roster while performing its own symphonic programs within the highest standards of professionalism."

Besides the CCP, the UST Symphony Orchestra has performed in other venues around the country and abroad.

The UST Symphony Orchestra is led by Musical Director and Conductor Prof. Herminigildo Ranera.
