Ateneo Blue Repertory Presents Spring Awakening

The Ateneo Blue Repertory, the premiere college musical theatre organization of the Ateneo de Manila University, presents the Tony Award-winning rock musical Spring Awakening as its finale offering for its 21st Season.
Spring Awakening tells the story of teenagers experiencing the conflicting emotions, confusing thoughts, and brave curiosity of adolescence. The free-spirited intellectual Melchior is frustrated over the close-minded and conservative nature of society. His buddy Moritz, while being pressured by his school’s unfair system, is haunted by wild sexual dreams. One of their childhood friends, Wendla is curious about the topic of sexuality, but her mother refuses to talk about it. Together with their peers, they paint a riveting tale of the woes of growing up through rock music.

Spring Awakening won 8 Tony Awards in 2007, including the Tony Award for Best Musical. Critics around the world have given stellar reviews for the musical, calling it “vital and new” (New York Times) and “a show that bristles with rawness, vitality and urgency” (Variety). Created by the award-winning team of Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, the musical is followed by a strong fan base around the world and even among Filipino youth.

Ateneo Blue Repertory’s Spring Awakening features blueREP alumnus Gab Medina as Melchior. Current blueREP members Boo Gabunada and Bernice Reyes will play Moritz and Wendla, respectively. Joining the cast are current member Maronne Cruz (blueREP’s Bare) and retuning blueREP alumna and recording artist Nica del Rosario alternating in the role of Ilse. The production also features another homecoming in blueREP alumnus Bym Buhain, who is returning from a professional theatre stint in shows such as 4th Wall Theater Company’s Rivalry: Ateneo-La Salle the Musical and Repertory Philippines’s Peter Pan. Kenneth Keng, a blueREP alumnus recently seen in Sipat Lawin’s Battalia Royale, will be playing the role of the adult male. Portraying the role of the adult female is Air Paz, a Theater Arts graduate from University of the Philippines who has done plays for Dulaang UP and has started to make a presence in different productions in TV and film.

The rest of the cast of Ateneo Blue Repertory’s Spring Awakening is rounded out by Tricia Allado, Tin Amante, Lara Antonio, Mikah Franco, Ian Hermogenes, Mikey Javier, David Mercado, Carlos Quiapo, Franco Ramos, Gala Sanchez, Arion Sanchez, RJ Santillan, Gabriel Perez, Darrell Uy, and Meg Yatco.

Delphine Buencamino, Zafira in Dulaang UP’s critically-acclaimed production of Orosman at Zafira and a blueREP alumna herself, takes charge as Spring Awakening’s choreographer. Lights design will be done by Meliton Roxas Jr. while set design is by Trency Caga-anan.
