Ateneo Blue Repertory Presents Spring Awakening

The Ateneo Blue Repertory, the premiere college musical theatre organization of the Ateneo de Manila University, presents the Tony Award-winning rock musical Spring Awakening as its finale offering for its 21st Season.
Spring Awakening tells the story of teenagers experiencing the conflicting emotions, confusing thoughts, and brave curiosity of adolescence. The free-spirited intellectual Melchior is frustrated over the close-minded and conservative nature of society. His buddy Moritz, while being pressured by his school’s unfair system, is haunted by wild sexual dreams. One of their childhood friends, Wendla is curious about the topic of sexuality, but her mother refuses to talk about it. Together with their peers, they paint a riveting tale of the woes of growing up through rock music.

Botong Francisco Through Lenses and Letters

National Artist for Visual Arts Carlos “Botong” Francisco is considered one of the Philippines’ most distinguished muralists.
He created enormous canvasses that chronicled the mythical world of the Filipino and its history, often seeking inspiration from tradition, folklore, myths, legends, and customs. While much has been said and written about Botong Francisco as a great artist, what was he like as a father to his three children or as a friend by his contemporaries? Keepsakes such as personal letters can provide more insight into Botong Francisco as a person.

7th Spring Film Festival at Shangri-La Plaza Mall

Now on its seventh year, the Ateneo de Manila University’s Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies together with Confucius Institute and Credit Suisse, with the cooperation of Ateneo Celadon and Shangri-La Plaza, brings you the Spring Film Festival this February 1-10, 2013.

Ibalong - A Dance Theater Musical Interpretation of the Bicolano

Tanghalang Pilipino caps its 26th season with a dance-theatre musical interpretation of the Bicolano epic, “Ibalong,” adapted for the stage by prolific playwright Rody Vera and directed by Tuxqs Rutaquio with Carol Bello’s musical direction, and Alden Lugnasin’s choreography.
Entitled after Legazpi City’s week-long festivity, “Ibalong,” the musical tells the story of Handyong and his warriors who come to Bicol ? formerly known as Ibalon ? and wage war against beasts and monsters pillaging the land’s natural wealth. Handyong mightily battles creatures bearing a solitary eye and three throats, several winged sharks, and wild carabaos.

Ateneo Children's Theater Presents Kules

Journey with Kules from perya (circus) to Olympus in Ateneo Children’s Theater’s annual production for its 81st season, Christine S. Bellen’s Kules.
This Filipino musical is an adaptation of the Greek tale Hercules. The main character Kules, goes on a journey to self-discovery. Set in a perya (circus) where amusement is at the core of all activities, the life of the crew is a testimony that happiness is indeed fleeting.

A Midsummer Night's Dream at the CCP

After the critical and box-office success of Rama, Hari, which had its full-house audiences giving rousing standing ovations after each performance, Ballet Philippines once again takes on an old-time favorite and gives it a new twist in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Running for one weekend only from February 15 to 17, 2013 at the CCP Main Theater, A Midsummer Night's Dream is a new ballet adaptation choreographed by Hong Kong-based award-winning Filipino choreographer Carlo Pacis. Based on the timeless romantic comedy of William Shakespeare and the music of Felix Mendelssohn, A Midsummer Night's Dream is a world premiere, and is Pacis’ first full-length ballet for Ballet Philippines.

Ballet Manila and Yewon Dance Company at Aliw Theater

Ballet Manila begins the year with a collaboration with South Korea's Yewon Dance Company in a show aptly titled DUO, featuring a repertoire of classical and contemporary pieces from the two groups.
Presented by the Manila Broadcasting Company, Aliw Theater, Ballet Manila and Star Theater, DUO will go on stage on January 26, Saturday, 5 p.m., at Aliw Theater and on January 27, Sunday, 5 p.m., at Star Theater. Both venues are located at the CCP Complex, Pasay City.

NCCA gets ready for Philippine Arts Festival 2013

The whole month of February of every year, the Philippines celebrates the National Arts Month (NAM). Since 1991, when Presidential Proclamation 683 was signed declaring February as National Arts Month, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the country’s prime agency for the arts and culture, has been spearheading its celebrating, initially with activities centering around the National Capital Region until they spread out to the regions. Now, NAM activities are being held all over the country.

Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of its music director Maestro Olivier Ochanine, welcomes the New Year in the PPO’s 5th season concert on January 25, 2013 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater) at 8:00 pm. PPO’s Associate concertmaster Dino Decena is featured artist.

The PPO celebrates four decades as an orchestra with a performance of a New Work for Violin and Orchestra expressly written by Ryan Cayabyab for the group’s 40th anniversary. Program also includes Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 “Spring”.

The King of the Birds, a philosophical fable turned theater piece about humanity’s search for salvation and meaning, closes Tanghalang Ateneo’s 34th season with shows slated for three weekends in Janaury-February 2013.
Drawn from a Persian poem by Farid ud-Din Attar and a performance text by Jean Claude Carriere and Peter Brook, the play tells the story of a nation of birds embarking on a difficult journey to meet their one true King, only to discover an unexpected truth about themselves.
