Exhibit Talk: Fr. Jose Arcilla SJ on Diego Silang

A native of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Diego Silang led a wide-ranging and initially successful revolt against Spanish authority during the British Invasion of 1762, but was killed by an assassin shortly after his rebellion began.
A member of the Ilocos principalia, a trader, and a courier for the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia, he was in Manila during the British Invasion, where he observed that Spanish authority could be defeated. Aggrieved like his provincemates by the oppressive tribute demanded by local Spanish officials, he took advantage of the Spanish military chaos, and led Ilocos in armed rebellion.

In this lecture, Fr. Arcilla SJ, history professor from Ateneo de Manila University, will discuss how the British Occupation had inspired Diego Silang to begin his own rebellion in Ilocos.

Fr. Jose Arcilla SJ is a Jesuit priest, scholar, writer, and history professor at Ateneo de Manila University. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from Berchmans College in Cebu, a Masters degree in History from Loyola University in Chicago, and a Ph.D. in philosophy and letters from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Arcilla has taught Philippine history at Xavier University and Ateneo de Davao.

Fr. Arcilla has written a number of articles, books, and papers on Philippine history. Among his notable works are An Introduction to Philippine History, Rizal and the Emergence of the Philippine Nation, The Fine Print of Philippine History, and Understanding the Noli.
Diego Silang is Fr. Arcilla's second lecture at Yuchengco Museum. Last October 20, he lectured on Simon de Anda and the Spanish Resistance to the British Occupation.

Exhibit talk comes with admission (P100 for adults, P50 for students, P25 for children and seniors)

Fr. Arcilla's talk on Diego Silang will be held at the museum's Yuchengco Group of Companies Gallery at the fourth floor, while Edward Schwarz and Miguel Guerrero's lectures on Rethinking the Way We Build and Steps to Sustainability in the Philippines will be simultaneously held at the museum's Masters Gallery at the ground floor.
