Mike Adrao's Solo Exhibition at the Tin-aw Art Gallery

Tin-aw Art Gallery presents Mike Adrao’s second solo exhibition of charcoal and pastel paintings on paper. Adrao’s pictorial worlds are surreal scenes of organic decay. Pieces like Lamat (Crack) and Agnas (Decompose) evoke atrophy and rupture, the decline of lush natural forms into decadent rot.

The artist depicts the human form overwhelmed by the unruly growth of barbs and thorns. In some, these heedless sprouts are entwined with the frenetic coils and veins of innards and tissues. Adrao depicts the body turned to husk and overwhelmed by inescapable decline. He places the body at the centre of a vibrant arabesque that maps the cycles of growth and blight.

Adrao’s images bide a vivid tempo, feverish, hypnotic, and urgent. He conveys fractured worlds through the sublime energies harnessed by art. Sunog (Fire) and Abuso Pyudal (Feudal abuse) partake of this roiling force. Both centre on entrapment, voids within a world overtaken by surging and swelling accretions. Sunog shows depths of a trap and the hapless stare of someone ensnared while the latter work depicts a body transfixed in time, frozen in vain gesture.

Adrao successfully contrasts the unremitting forces of nature with the constraints imposed by humans themselves. Indeed the snares we so cleverly design turn out to be ruse against ourselves, fuelled as they are by voracious greed. While the artist paints these grim albeit fascinating forms, he endows fracture with redeeming force. These paintings are the culmination of a project begun many years back with curator Bobi Valenzuela. The project steadily progressed and came to this - a set of works he considers an act of casting out, of expanding, of fielding a net out into a wider world. Decay in this sense is revelation, a timely redemption.

Michael Adrao studied Studio Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman. His 2009 solo exhibition Beyond Recognition was mounted at Project Space Pilipinas in Mandaluyong. He participated in numerous group exhibitions since 2003, most recent were Small World at Tin-aw Art Gallery and Monumental at Manila Contemporary. His works were also included in group exhibitions in Incheon South Korea and Soka Gakkai Malaysia. Adrao was recipient of residencies sponsored by NEAR Dangsang in Seoul and Project Space Manila in Mandaluyong.
