Gantimpala Theater Si Jack at ang Mahiwagang Beanstalk

In line with its tradition of giving qualitytheater for children, Gantimpala Theater presents “Si Jack at ang Mahiwagang Beanstalk,” an original Filipino children’s musical with book and libretto by J. Dennis Teodosio, music by RJ Jimenez, under the direction of Jose Jeffrey Camañag and Gean Allain de Leon.

Teodosio says, “I re-acquainted myself with the familiar fairy tale character and in this incarnation, Jack is now a young man who believes in the power of his dreams. Giving life to him is TV star Lucky Mercado.”

Together with his best friend Poy, Abner Delina Jr., (the new Batibot’s Kuya Fidel), Jack with the gigantic beanstalk as his path, goes up to the palace on the sky, to reclaim from the monstrous Bardagol (Leo Ponseca) his family’s treasures.

“The musical talks about using the imagination and how believing in the power of one’s dream brings it to realization,” the playwright claims. “It teaches all of us to be more discerning, to choose what is best and right, taking into consideration that our choices affect or bring change.”

“Cool,” is Mercado’s description of Jack. “He is really kwela and makulit, so eager to prove his worth, I know this may seem like a cliché but we are very similar in so many ways.”

The theater newbie shares, “My favorite in the musical is the duet with Gng. Dela Cruz, (Heidi Arima), who acts as my mother. It’s very dramatic and so heart wrenching. In the song, I am promising my mother that one day, she will be proud of me.”

Abner Delina Jr. is Poy, Jack’s best friend. “Poy is the story teller, comic relief and jester,” tells Delina. “He is the one who brings forth the musical’s lessons.”

“The musical teaches kids to value their friends. It explains why family is important. It justifies how simple living makes one happier and how dreams do come true with perseverance,” Delina discloses.

Other important characters in the musical are Maria, (Ruth Alferez), the enchantress, Jill, (Joan Beato), the singing harp; Joe (Rene Nisperos), the talking abacus; Golda (Sarah Pagay) a boisterous golden duck, and Beki (Natalie Go Azucena), Jack’s pet cow.

“The music that RJ Jimenez made is so youthful and fun,” avers the directors Camañag and de Leon. “His compositions gave the musical vibrancy, a contagious energy that brings cheers and happy thoughts to every one.”

Camañag added, “Si Jack at ang Mahiwagang Beanstalk was supposedly a production directed by our late artistic director Tony Espejo. We hope that we succeed in realizing his vision, of kids experiencing quality Filipino theater and that during musical, they feel the joy, love and magic of this immortal fairy tale.”

Helping the directorial duo realize the world of Si Jack at ang Mahiwagang Beanstalk are Andy Villareal (lighting designer), Joey de Guzman (set designer), Carlos Niño Percil (choreographer), Roselle Buenaventura (stage manager) and Jorge Cabullo (production manager).
