Katrina Saporsantos in Concert at the Cultural Center of Philippines

Noted young soprano Katrina Saporsantos is the featured artist of the second concert of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Special Concert Series on August 29 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater).
Ms. Saporsantos completed her Professional Studies Certificate at the Manhattan School of Music (MSM), where she also received her Master of Music degree in Classical Voice Performance under the studio of American soprano Ashley Putnam.

She was already very active in the Philippine classical music scene even while still a student at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Music where she finished her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice, and Diploma in Creative and Performing Musical Arts, under the tutelage of tenor Ramon Acoymo.

She has been featured soloist of the Bamboo Organ Festival from 2004 to 2006, the 7th San Agustin International Music Festival, and the 12th Pundaquit Music Festival. Her orchestral debut was as soprano soloist in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra and Master Chorale in 2002 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). She performed the same work with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballet Philippines and the Philippine Madrigal Singers in 2003. She was one of the soprano soloists in the Philippine premiere of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, “Symphony of a Thousand”. She sang the role of Bizen no Kata (Chatelaine of Bizen) in 2003 in the world premiere of Manuel Maramba’s opera Takayama Ukon at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Japan. In that same year, UP awarded her a certificate of distinction for “Exemplary Achievement in a National Competition” in recognition of her winning Third Place in the Solo Voice Category C-1 at the 2002 National Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA).

In New York, she sang for the master classes conducted by Lauren Flanigan, Stephanie Blythe, and Marilyn Horne. She was part of Lucas Foss’ opera Griffelkin in celebration of MSM’s 90th Anniversary, and performed the roles of Elisabetta in Maria Stuarda, Chimène in Le Cid, Mimi from La Bohème, Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, Leonora in Il Trovatore, Cio-Ciosan in Madama Butterfly and Desdemona in Otello in various opera scenes concerts at MSM. She has worked with conductor Kenneth Kiesler in Richard Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with the Manhattan Philharmonia, and in Mahler’s 2nd Symphony (“Resurrection”) with the MSM Symphony Orchestra and Chorus at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in 2010. She recently sang the soprano solo of Bizet’s Te Deum and Saint Saëns’ Christmas Oratorio with the Children’s Orchestra Society in a concert presented by the Felipe Padilla De Leon Foundation. Early this year, she was featured in a concert with the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers. She is the First Prize winner of Manhattan School of Music’s 2008 Eisenberg-Fried Concerto Competition (Voice).

Her program includes Turina’s Tres Poemas, Op. 81; Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, WWV 91; Chausson’s Chanson perpétuelle, op. 37; Verdi’s Stornello, Perduta ho la pace, and Deh, pietoso, oh Addolorata; and Selections from Caberet Songs 1& 2 by Bolcom. Augusto Espino, faculty member of the UP College of Music, collaborates with her on the piano.

She will be giving a voice masterclass on Saturday, September 1, and Tuesday, September 4 from 1 PM to 5 PM at the CCP MKP Multi-Purpose Hall at the Fourth Floor.

Featuring young outstanding Filipino musical talents in solo concerts, the Special Concert Series opened with the concert of pianist Charisse Baldoria on July 11. The last Series concert will present cellist Antoni Josef Inacay on September 26.
