Tanghalang Pilipino 26th Theater Season - Walang Sugat

Now on its 26th theater season, Tanghalang Pilipino (TP) announces its lineup of shows that are reflective of its two guiding principles - the essential unity of what is good, beautiful, and true as well as the belief that the theater artist is a ‘prophet’ that imitates reality and makes a better copy of the truth.
On August 9th till the 26th, the banner production titled ‘Walang Sugat’ will be staged and will be given a different treatment for avid theater followers to experience and further appreciate this ‘subversive’ literary masterpiece of Severino Reyes. Also, this stage presentation is considered as one of the major and popular sarswelas in the Philippines during the American colony from 1898 to 1946.

Carlos Siguion-Reyna debuts onstage as the show’s director and promises to provide a more ‘intriguing’ value of the said musical presentation. It is also a reminder of what Marcus Garvey have once said, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”

‘Walang Sugat’ is about a love story of Julia and Tenyong, of poetic proportions, which interweaves the personal with the national struggles and awakens the audience’s sense of heroism and patriotism.

Cris Villonco plays Julia, Noel Rayos as Tenyong while Antonio Ferrer reprises his role (as Rayos’s alternate), which he took on when he did the said production in Ateneo de Manila University production.

Noemi Manikan-Gomez, the original leading lady of TP’s ‘Dalagang Bukid’ takes on the role of Julia’s mother, Juana. Bodjie Pascua and Lou Veloso are alternating for Tadeo so as the two equally-talented Jennifer Villegas and Jean Judith Javier as Monica. Red Nuestro and Jonathan Tadioan as Lucas, Gino Ramirez breathes into Miguel while Jelson Bay as Padre Teban. Also, the ensemble consists of Tanghalang Pilipino’s Actors Company.

The Libretto is by Severino Reyes, with additional line by Nick Tiongson. The music is by Fulgencio Tolentino, Constancio de Guzman, Mike Velarde, with additional music and music direction by Chino Toledo. Nonoy Froilan tackles the show’s choreography. Tuxqs Rutaquio is doing the set design, James Reyes of Slims Fashion and Arts School is doing the lead’s costumes, and Katsch Catoy for lighting design, respectively.

Other productions of TP’s 26th theatre season are ‘Walang Kukurap’ by Layeta Bucoy, ‘Stageshow’ by the late Mario O’Hara, and ‘Ibalong’ by Rody Vera.
