WITH PASSION AND PURPOSE, PHOTOGRAPHS BY RICK ROCAMORA

The images by San Francisco-based photographer Rick Rocamora focuson the “people he wants us
to look at and think about.” Selected black and white photographs represent the various
series Ricamora has been pursuing since taking on a career as a documentary photographer in
the 1980s. These include the series America’s Second-Class Veterans that captured the plight
of the Filipino war veterans. In his regular visits to the Philippines, Rocamora explores
themes focusing on the homeless, informal settlers, mothersin maternity wards, inmates in
city jails,and juvenile detention centers. At times,personal bonds are established with his
subjects. He is able to capture imagesthat are poignant but not necessarily hopeless
conditions.

HEROES BY TONY DEZUNIGA

An exhibit of original drawings and digital reproductions by the late Tony DeZuniga,one of the first Filipino comic book illustrators to work for Marvel Comicsand DC Comics. In his 40-year career,DeZuniga has penned the classic superheroes such as the Incredible Hulk, Spider Man, Captain America, and Conan. He is known as the creator ofthe Western anti-hero Jonah Hex as well as of female superheroes Spider-Woman and The Black Orchid. DeZuniga crossed over to the world of video game design as senior conceptual designer for Sony Entertainment, Universal Digital Arts, and Sega. He created theconcepts and arcade art for Sega’s Commando type soldiers Dynamite Deka or Dynamite Cop.

On its 8th year, the Virgin Labfest brings 9 new one-act plays, 1 full-length play and 3 staged readings with bolder dramatic themes written by new, emerging and established writers. This year we bring back the Virgin Labfest Writing Fellowship Program with award winning playwright Glenn Mas mentoring selected aspiring writers in a two-week study and practice of dramatic writing for the stage. This festival is a joint project of the CCP, Writer’s Bloc, Inc. and Tanghalang Pilipino with support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

RECOLLECTION 1081: CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER (Visual dissent under martial rule)

In commemoration of the 40th year since the declaration of martial law, this exhibit will bring together visual artists whose creative output captured the mood and sentiments of that political era. It aims to capture memories, issues, and concerns from that pivotal period of September 21, 1972 all the way to the fall of the Marcos regime in February 1986. Also included are recent works that continue to resonate with issues prevalent then and now. Among the featured artists are National Artist BenCab, Jaime de Guzman, Alfredo Liongoren, Pablo Baens Santos, Egay Fernandez, JULY Biboy Delotavo, Al Manrique, Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi, Anna Fer, Nunelucio Alvardo, Manny Garibay, Jose Tence Ruiz, Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Neil Doloricon, and Orlando Castillo. This exhibit is organized by the Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development (CANVAS) and Liongoren Gallery in collaboration with the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

SPECIAL CONCERT SERIES I: CHARISSE BALDORIA, piano

Charisse Baldoria’s programs reflect her fascination with folk music and the cultural exchanges between the East and West, focusing on the Spanish empire, drawing relationships between Spain, Cuba and the Philippines, and dances like the habanera and flamenco. She has, of late, incorporated works from or inspired by Asia. Program includes works by Scarlatti, Albeniz, Cervantes,Buencamino, Debussy, Santos and Farr.
