Charisse Baldoria at Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino

The Cultural Center of the Philippines launches the first concert of the Special Concert Series, a series of solo concerts showcasing young outstanding Filipino musical talents. This first concert features US-based award-winning pianist Charisse Baldoria at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino at 7:30pm.

Pianist Charisse Baldoria’s programs reflect her fascination with folk music and the cultural exchanges between East and West. Since her doctoral presentation on the folk-inspired piano music of Bartók, Szymanowski, and Falla, she has focused on the Spanish empire, drawing relationships between Spain, Cuba, the Philippines, and dances like the habanera and flamenco.

She has performed these programs in Spain, the United States, and Asia, giving, among others, a concert at the International Festival of Spanish Keyboard Music (FIMTE) in Almería, Spain; presentations at the College of Music Society (CMS) International Conference in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid and in the CMS Northeast Conference in Vermont; concerts in Japan and Myanmar; and a series of concerts and lectures sponsored by Spain’s Ministry of Culture and the Instituto Cervantes. Awarded a grant by the Cuban Research Institute, Dr. Baldoria also did research at Florida International University’s Díaz Ayala Collection, the world’s most comprehensive Cuban music collection. Her research has also taken her to Cuba. In her new programs, she branches off from Hispanic music and tries to incorporate works from or inspired by Asia.

Dr. Baldoria was a two-time First Prize winner of the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) and the Yamaha Electone Festival, and a First Prize winner of the Jeffrey Ching and UP College of Music piano competitions. Since moving to the United States, she has won the concerto competition twice at the University of Michigan, the First Prize at the Society for Musical Arts Competition, and the Fourth Prize in the San Antonio International Piano Competition. She also received awards at the Hilton Head and Ducrest international piano competitions, and finished among the top 12 in the world at the Sydney International Piano Competition.

Her program includes Scarlatti’s Sonatas in F minor, K466 and K239; Cervantes’ Danzas Cubanas, Buencamino’s Harana, Debussy’s Pagodes (from Estampes), Santos’ K’lintang, Farr’s Tentang Cara Gamelan and Albeniz’ Iberia.

She will be giving a piano masterclass on Thursday, July 12 from 1 PM to 5:20 PM at the CCP 4th Floor Multi-Purpose Hall. Other featured artists of the Series are soprano Katrina Saporsantos (August 29) and cellist Antoni Josef Inacay (September 26).
