Mimi Tecson's First Solo Exhibit

Mimi Tecson relives a poignant memory in her 1st solo exhibition. Dust in the Sunbeam recreates this particular recollection.

Whether real or imagined, still existent or relegated to a distant past, we have our own “happy places” that provide refuge. It is a sanctuary that never fades despite the passage of time or the inconveniences of geography.

The presence of this abstract haven helps us navigate a cumbrous life. Don’t we all look for this space of pure bliss? Where one can get away to rest one’s head, heal one’s heart ? a safe place that allows you to quietly put the pieces back together.

Tecson’s “happy place” is her grandmother’s old tindahan, which was named after her. Amidst the array of garapons containing every sweet treat, at Laureen’s Store, the artist found a space exclusively her own.

The early morning sunbeams filtering through the holes of the wooden planks her grandmother used to close the tindahan are still vivid reminiscences. Bathed in sunlight, embraced by the warmth of remembrance, Tecson recreates her lola’s sari-sari store. Crafting the same wooden planks, soft drink bottle cases, plastic toys, tansan and a host of bric-a-bracs are creatively put together into eloquent sculptures.

Through Dust in the Sunbeam, Mimi Tecson invites her audience to revisit their own happy retreats.
