Forbidden Broadway - Broadway Musical

Upstart Productions proudly presents the Off-Broadway smash hit “Forbidden Broadway,” a cabaret revue sharply spoofing show tunes, characters and plots of contemporary and current Broadway musicals.

“Forbidden Broadway,” which was conceived, written and directed by Gerard Alessandrini has mocked popular shows like The Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Les Misérables, Mamma Mia!, Cats, Hairspray, and Rent, to name a few.
It also targets famous Broadway actors, writers, composers, directors, choreographers and producers, including Julie Andrews, Mel Brooks, Carol Channing, Kristin Chenoweth, Michael Crawford, Harvey Fierstein, Bob Fosse, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Goulet, Jerry Herman, Dustin Hoffman, Jennifer Holiday, Elton John, Angela Lansbury, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Patti LuPone, Cameron Mackintosh, Mary Martin, Idina Menzel, Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Rita Moreno, Bebe Neuwirth, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, Chita Rivera, Stephen Sondheim, Barbra Streisand, Julie Taymor, and Gwen Verdon.

The original version of “Forbidden Broadway” opened on January 15, 1982 at the Palsson's Supper Club on New York’s Upper West side. An unemployed actor, Gerard Alessandrini, wanted a showcase for his talents. He decided to assemble some of the musical parodies of Broadway shows he had written since childhood into a nightclub act.

Critics and audiences were wowed and it has since become New York's longest running musical comedy revue.

Gerard Alessandrini has rewritten the show over a dozen times over the years to include parodies of newer shows. In the original iteration of the show, he was one of the original actors with Michael Chapman as director and producer. In April 1982, Chloe Webb joined the cast, Jeff Martin succeeded Michael Chapman as director. Alessandrini assumed the directing position subsequently, with Phillip George, Alessandrini's long-time collaborator, co-directing all of the editions of the revue since 2004.

The show, in its various editions, has received over 9,000 performances and been seen in more than 200 U.S. cities as well as playing in London, Tokyo, Singapore and Sydney.

“Forbidden Broadway” has won awards from Tony and Drama Desk, Obie and Outer Critics Circle.

“Forbidden Broadway” is a four-person show, with two men and two women playing pivotal roles.

The cast includes Liesl Batucan. A two-time Aliw Award Winner for Best Actress, Liesl has appeared in over 100 theatrical productions for Repertory Philippines, including Next Fall, The Sound of Music, Little Shop of Horrors, The Fantasticks, The Wizard of Oz, The Merchant of Venice, and Our Town, to name but a few. She has also appeared in Tanghalang Pilipino’s critically-acclaimed productions of Golden Child and American Hwangap, as well as in shows in New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Budapest.

The artistic and creative team of “FORBIDDEN BROADWAY ” is led by Joel Trinidad (Artistic Director), with Martin Esteva (Lighting Designer), Lawyn Cruz (Production Designer), Dingdong Fiel (Musical Director), and Onyl Torres (Vocal Coach).
