Why its more fun in the Philippines?

US envoy Ambassador Harry Thomas is spreading the good word:

" It’s more fun in the Philippines"

US Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr.

The jazz-loving diplomat, who has changed his tune. The change will most likely be music to the ears of Philippine tourism officials.

While the country prepares to roll out its new tourism slogan worldwide, US Ambassador to Manila Harry Thomas Jr. has been doing his part to spread the word that it is more stimulating in the Philippines.
“I can tell you honestly, it’s more fun in the Philippines,” Thomas said at a recent gathering of Filipino-Americans in San Francisco.

Amazing Group of Pinoy Artists - El Gamma Penumbra

El Gamma Penumbra

El Gamma Penumbra, the shadow theater group from Tanauan, Batangas  is one of the finalists of the Pilipinas Got Talent (PGT) Season 3 last year. The group had a shadow theater performance based on the “Piliin Ang Pilipinas” (Choose Philippines) tourism campaign.

This group is very talented and amazing, their presentation is unique, it only shows that  Pinoy Artists are really world class. After watching their wonderful performance at the  Pinoy Got Talent,  what I can only say is "WOW!".

You must watch them perform.

PETA's Asian People's Theater Workshop

Running from 7 to 15 days, the APTW is an intensive course on PETA’s integrated theater arts method which focuses on improvisational techniques combined with the integrated theater arts processes such as creative drama, visual arts, body movement and dance, sound and music, creative writing and group dynamics.

The course is open to all theater practitioners, development workers, educators and individuals interested in using theater processes to draw out the creative power in themselves and in the people they work with. Through group processes and hands-on theater experiences, the participants will be able to create small improvisational pieces using social realities and community and cultural exposures as bases of creation. These pieces form part of the participants’ showcase within the workshop period. The course also includes sharing of PETA’s work and experiences on theater for development and advocacy as well as on theater in education.

The PETA School of People’s Theater (SPT) initiated this course in 1997. A group of Japanese artists and educators requested PETA to organize and facilitate a training program in Manila for their group of artists, journalists, teachers, NGO workers, local government workers, human rights advocates and students using PETA’s integrated theater arts process. The training lasted for two weeks and it started an annual training program open to other nationalities. It addressed not only the participants’ developmental needs but also served as an alternative cultural tourism since an essential component of the course is the community and cultural exposure and interaction. The participants were able to use and apply the methods and processes in their respective countries using themes of peace, family communication, gender and sexuality, community development, environmental preservation and cultural heritage, among others.

After more than a decade, PETA has enriched the course with new and relevant training content based on PETA’s best work practices in its community, education, developmental and partnership programs in the Philippines and around the world.

MANILA, Philippines - Silent romance "The Artist" won five Oscars on Sunday (Monday morning in Manila) including best film, and Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" also took five of the world's top movie honors on a night where stories about movies felt the love of Hollywood.
"The Artist," a black-and-white tale of a fading star who finds redemption through romance in the era when silent movies were overtaken by talkies, added to its best film victory with Oscars for its French star Jean Dujardin and director Michel Hazanavicius, as well for musical score and costume design.
"I am the happiest director in the world right now. Thank you for that," Hazanavicius told the audience of stars including George Clooney, Michelle Williams, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Dujardin was equally excited, exclaiming "I love this country" before thanking the Academy, fellow filmmakers and his wife and recalling silent actor Douglas Fairbanks as an inspiration.

Meryl Streep won for her role as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who is slipping into dementia in "The Iron Lady." It was Streep's third Academy Award out of 17 nominations. She joked that the audience was probably tired of seeing her, then added, "whatever." Senakulo - Moriones Festival

Moriones Senakulo

Senakulo or Cenacle is a traditional play of the creation of everything up to Christ’s passion and death in most towns and cities in the Philippines during Holy Week.

From town plazas, churchyards or in theatres, people gather to witness and meet friends, chat and sometimes ogle and cheer their friends and family playing a part. Not that the audience are very attentive, but the story is quite familiar and usually their there for the sake of having fun.

One example is the authentic Senakulo in Marinduque. Senakulo is one of the highlights of Moriones Festival during the Lenten season. Starting from the cast, venue, stage, props, and other equipment were combined perfectly. It is like you are there witnessing the events that are happening in the present time. The realistic Senakulo of Marinduque pioneered way back in 1977.

Since then, it has been passed from generation to generation and has been very consistent on making the dramatic presentation of Senakulo more astounding. Furthermore, most of the participants say that this is their way to show their abstinence before and during the Lenten season. On the whole, Senakulo is one of the MUST SEE during your holly week stay here in the Philippines.

Visit the Philippines during lenten season and witness/experience the different culture and traditions of the people.

PETA's Summer Workshop

Summer is here and for sure most us are looking for activities for our children. Since I'm a theater enthusiast, I think theater workshops would be a great idea for my kids... after searching/surfing in the internet I found PETA's website and I just want to share some details on the summer workshop they are offering that you might be interested...

• CHILDREN’S THEATER 2 (Ages 9-12)
• TEEN THEATER 1 (Ages 13-16)
• THEATER ARTS 1 (Ages 17 up)

• BASIC ACTING FOR THEATER: Theater for Artistic Development 1(Aspiring stage performers ages 17 up)
• CREATIVE MUSICAL THEATER: Theater for Artistic Development 2(Musically-inclined individuals ages 17 up)
• CREATIVE DANCE THEATER: Theater for Artistic Development 3(Movement and dance aficionados ages 17 up)
• CREATIVE PEDAGOGY: Theater-in-Education 1 (High school drama club advisers/moderators)

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) annual Summer Theater Arts Workshop offers creative learning in a fun and active way.  Courses run for an average of 12 to 20 sessions ending in a showcase performance for all participants from each of the different courses.

PETA’s Children’s Theater courses enable children to explore and experience music, movement and dance, visual arts, storytelling, drama improvisation, poetry and simple story writing.
Coupled with lots of fun and games, PETA’s creative processes will also develop and enrich every child’s imagination, inspiration, self-confidence, self-appreciation and appreciation of others, nature and culture.

The Teen Theater course challenges the experimental and adventurous nature of the youth through the unique PETA Integrated Theater Arts approach. The course mixes creative drama, creative sounds and music, creative writing, creative body movements and dance, visual arts as well as improvisational theater and new media, allowing teens to express their talents and articulate youth power as they mount their own original piece on relevant youth concerns as part of their recital.

Young aspiring actors, from 17 years old and up, can acquire fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes in improvisational theater production, theater history, theater appreciation, aesthetics and criticism through the Theater Arts course.

PETA is also offering various advanced courses. The Basic Acting course features a series of dialogues with seasoned theater artists, coupled with motivated acting exercises which can turn anyone into a budding stage actor.

The Creative Musical Theater course has sessions on voice, composition, performance and various music explorations.

Creative Dance Theater explores body and movement as media of artistic expression, and examines the rudiments of movement as a way to tell stories using various dance forms.

PETA’s Creative Pedagogy is a special course for formal and non-formal teachers and educators that demonstrates various creative methodologies, approaches and philosophies in the teaching of arts and academic subjects.

A Different Way To Promote Music ( Pinoy Artist - Djembe Maker)

Djembe is a rope tuned skin covered drum play with bare hands

A Pinoy Artist is making  name in this musical instrument that has been popular in African nation. Romeo Ed  Abaigar is one of the noted  person making the Djembe instrument in the Philippines, He makes use of goat skin in creating this African instrument.

He has found a way to put his share in promoting music, though not as an instrumentalist but as instrument-maker.

He hand-crafts Djembe, a percussion instrument looking like a big version of bonggos and serves as accompaniment to another percussion called dunun.

Last January Ed Abaigar spearheaded, with the help of Singapore-based Djembe expert Kit Perez, a workshop for Djembe enthusiasts conducted at the Makati Youth Center in Makati.

Romeo Ed Abaigar
A character actor and theater artist who has appeared in TV Commercials and Teleserye like the recent "Amaya"

Abaigar says, “There’s a good future for djembe here to become popular among musicians, considering the positive energy it brings when playing it.”

Let us support and promote  Pinoy Artists!

Why I want to watch Olivia Newton John Concert Live in Manila

I belong to the Gen X people, where music of Olivia Newton John is one of the favorites, her greatest hits in the 80s like Physical, Xanadu and more are really memorable. Now hearing and seeing her sing is one of a lifetime opportunity that I should not pass. That is  why its high time to bring back the times, enjoy again her music and watch her sing live for the first time.

The much loved star of the 70s and 80s still continues to charm people everywhere. Newton-John is soulfully committed to every word she sings and I am always taken by the warmth of her voice....

I salute her continuing efforts to help find a cure for cancer and that is why Olivia's worldwide popularity is as strong as ever. I'm one of her million fans forever. Listening and watching her perform live is a big dream that will come true!. Can't wait of the Newton-John's Big Concert  in Manila.  I hope and pray this will happen.

‘Magno Rubio’ in LA theater awards

“THE ROMANCE of Magno Rubio” examines the lives of homesick Filipino migrant workers in 1930s California. photo: Hydee Ursolino Abrahan

LOS ANGELES – “The Romance of Magno Rubio,” a revival of Lonnie Carter’s stage adaptation of Carlos Bulosan’s seminal short story at [Inside] the Ford in Hollywood last November, earned five nominations in the LA Weekly Theater Awards.

The play on a group of homesick Filipino migrant workers in 1930s California garnered nods for direction (Bernardo Bernardo), ensemble, lead male performance (Jon Jon Briones), choreography (Peter De Guzman) and fight choreography (Felix Roiles). The multiple nominations was a first in the Ford’s history.
Executive producer Ted Benito of PAE Live!, which staged the play in alternating English and Tagalog performances for the first time, said, “Just to be nominated is a big deal because out of the hundreds of theater productions that open every year, ‘Romance’ was among only 54 productions that were nominated.”
The LA Weekly Theater Awards, which honors the best work in small stages, is on its 33rd year. Voted on by the publication’s theater critics, the awards will be presented in a Greek style bash on April 2 at the Avalon in Hollywood.

Cirque Mother Africa at Resorts World Manila

For the first time in Manila, the world-renowned Cirque Mother Africa (created by professional acrobat Winston Ruddle) will dazzle and mesmerize local audiences with wild African music, dance and performance in a two-hour showcase.
The series of performances will start from April 19 to 22 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila.
Having performed in sold out shows staged in Germany, Italy, Romania, Russia, Netherlands, Australia, Belgium and Spain – Cirque Mother Africa will tantalize audiences in Manila with a unique African-themed spectacle.
Dancers, percussionists, singers, acrobats and contortionists energetically take to the stage in a celebration of the culture of the traditional and modern African arts & culture.
The heartbeat of Africa pulsates throughout the jaw-dropping show as the musicians and artistes articulate their passion and love for their homeland including Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Benin, Zimbabwe, and Guinea.
The innovative show combines the talents from nine African countries to provide the wonder, suspense and joy of Cirque Mother Africa.
The show is a delight for the senses with items spun through the air, bodies contorted into mind-boggling shapes, and performers balance on other performers, percussionists beat up a storm of sound and traditional dancers tell their own stories. The audience will be overwhelmed by the complexity and versatility of these world-class acts.
Masks, drums, beads, and amazing costumes all bring forth the feel of authentic African traditions.
Cirque Mother Africa is not just a traditional African show. It also has a take on the modern, fresh and dynamic culture of the new Africa. Young acrobats perform feats that belong in any world-class circus, and energetic young performers compete in tap-dancing that is a toe-tapping delight. This is a fresh and fantastic show that evokes passion and demands a response. Audiences are encouraged, prodded and charmed to actively respond rather than to simply watch a breath-taking spectacle.
