Ms. Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup graces this year’s celebration of the Philippine Arts Festival (PAF) 2012 as the Ambassadress for Architecture.

Supsup proves to be an epitome of a woman blessed with both beauty and brains. Aside from being recognized as one of the beautiful women of the world, radiating with confidence, glamour and sophistication with her title, she also topped the 2010 Architecture Licensure Examination.

Architect Gerard Lico, head of the National Committee for Architecture and Allied Arts, and Supsup’s former professor has nothing but praises to her. “We feel truly happy, proud and honored that Shamcey is able to take on the role as NCCA’s Ambassadress for Architecture, her being a topnotcher in the Architecture Board, and a former student of the University of the Philippines. We believe that she will be able to help us promote not only the events of the Architecture committee, but the whole arts festival come February,” says Arch. Lico.

Supsup graces this year’s Manila press conference for PAF 2012 that will be held in February in celebration of the 21st year of the National Arts Month. This is in pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 683 signed in 1991. The month-long festival is spearheaded by the NCCA, led by its chairman Felipe de Leon Jr. and OIC-executive director Adelina Suemith, with Marichu Tellano as head of the Planning, Policy Formulation, and Programming Division.

PHILIPPINE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) is the country’s leading orchestra and is widely regarded as one of the top musical ensembles in the Asia-Pacific region. The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra was established on May 15, 1973 as the CCP Philharmonic Orchestra and was initially intended to accompany performing artists at the CCP Theater.

The PPO’s first music director was Prof. Luis Valencia with Julian Quirit as concertmaster. In 1979, then First Lady Imelda R. Marcos asked Prof. Oscar C. Yatco to reorganize the orchestra. Three years later, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra was born with a new vision – to be ranked among the best in the world.

The PPO has performed with many of the world’s renowned conductors that include Mendi Rodan, Piero Gamba, Enrique Batis, Sebastian Bereau and Nicholas Koch. It has also performed with the best foreign and Filipino artists such as Van Cliburn, Renata Tebaldi, Judith Engel, Anthony Camden, David Benoit, Cecile Licad, Raul Sunico and Lea Salonga.

The PPO has toured Europe in 2001 and has participated in the Asia Orchestra Week in September 2002 held at the Tokyo Opera City Hall upon the invitation of the Association of Japanese Symphony Orchestras. It has performed at Bangkok’s National Theater in September 2004 upon the invitation of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vandhana of Thailand.

The PPO has premiered Filipino compositions and has featured works by foreign composers not yet performed in the Philippines. It continues to promote music appreciation through outreach concerts in schools, parishes, government agencies and underserved communities in Metro Manila and in different regions in the country.

RAMON OBUSAN FOLKLORIC GROUP

The Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group (ROFG) celebrates 32 years of preservation and perpetuation of Philippine traditions with special emphasis on music and dance.

Founded in 1972, the ROFG started as a fledging folk dance company, composed of some thirty performers. Leaning on the vast amount of data and artifacts that he has accumulated while he was doing researches, Ramon A. Obusan thought of starting a dance company that will mirror the traditional culture of the Filipinos through dance and music.

For thirty-two years, the ROFG has created a niche in the world of dance as forerunner of Philippine folk dance performed closest to the original. Boasting of over a thousand performances in the Philippines and abroad, the ROFG is one of the Cultural Center of the Philippines' leading resident companies since 1986.

Though steep with international recognition, the ROFG has never forgotten the people who are the very source of its pride. For the past two decades it has documented and performed the rituals of more than 50 ethno-linguistic groups in the country. With more than twenty outstanding full-length Filipino dance works, among which are the memorable suites from the Cordillera, Bagobo, T'boli, Tausug, Maranao, the Aetas and the Talaandig among others - the ROFG has served to highlight the authenticity of the movements and costumes of these people.

TANGHALANG PILIPINO CAPS ITS 25th SEASON WITH EYEBALL: New Visions in Philippine Theater

World-class Filipino artistry will once again be celebrated as Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident drama company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, concludes its 25th Theater Season with EYEBALL: New Visions in Philippine Theater. This production features four of the best plays from the Virgin Labfest, the yearly festival of new works for the theater. The select plays deal with the theme, “Searching” and tackle man’s search for love, for lost family bonds, for noble ideals, for closure, and for missing loved ones.

EYEBALL will be shown as two sets of twin-bills. Set A includes Carlo Pacolor Garcia’s hilarious Bakit Wala Nang Nagtatagpo sa Philcoa Oberpas, directed by Riki Benedicto, which tells the story of a man and a woman who decide to meet at the Philcoa Overpass after months of flirting online. The cast of this riotous play includes TP Actors Company members Jonathan Tadioan, Jelson Bay, Martha Comia, Marco Viaña and Gino Ramirez; and guest artists Pam Hundana and Carmina Capile. In Doc Resureccion: Gagamutin ang Bayan, by Layeta Bucoy (Directed by Tuxqs Rutaqio), a well-meaning doctor runs for Mayor only to find out that the community he so wanted to help desires a different path for itself. This intriguing work features action-packed performances of Riki Benedicto, Jonathan Tadioan, Rayna Reyes and Miss Sherry Lara.

Set B is composed of plays directed by the exceptional director Chris Millado. In Reuel Molina Aguila’s Maliw, five years after the forced-disappearance of her eldest daughter, a mother confronts the question:  How does one close a chapter still to be written? The play is set after her family celebrates her eldest daughter’s 30th birthday. This bittersweet play showcases brilliant acting by Sherry Lara, Spanky Manikan and TP Actors Company scholar Regina de Vera. Isang Araw sa Karnabal is Nick Pichay’s funny but poignant play about two former activists, both with missing loved ones, meeting again after a long time and attempting to mend broken ties. Sheenly Gener leads the cast which includes Marco Viaña and Martha Comia.

To complement the superb directors and the brilliant ensemble, TP selected a creative team of sought-after designers that includes Eric Cruz for the new set designs, Katsch Catoy for the lighting design, and TJ Ramos for the soundscape.

EYEBALL: New Visions in Philippine Theater opens on January 13, 2012 and runs for four weekends until February 12, 2012 at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater). Regular ticket price is Php600, with student and senior citizen discounts.
