2010-2011 PPO SEASON CONCERT VII:
VERDI’S MONUMENTAL REQUIEM
Helen Lyons, soprano
Nicole Brikland, mezzo
Leodigario Del Rosario, tenor
Andrew Fernando, baritone/bass
Philippine Madrigal Singers et al
Ateneo Chamber Singers
AUP Ambassadors Chorale Arts Society
Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra
Olivier Ochanine, conductor
The PPO’s March season concert features two works of monumental significance by the Italian composer Guiseppe Verdi. The first represents a symbolic and historical feat: this year’s 150-year anniversary of Italy’s unification. The opera Nabucco, Verdi’s first very successful opera, has become very known in part for its beautiful chorus ‘Va, pensiero’, which has become the unofficial second national anthem of Italy, and which is also included in the overture to Nabucco, the first work on this concert.
The second work, the ‘war horse’ for this PPO concert, is the magnificent, terrifying and exhilarating Requiem of Verdi. While Verdi was not a pious man, he certainly is able here to give the listener quite the Requiem that puts into doubt his dislikes for religion. Joining the PPO and Maestro Ochanine for this performance are soloists Helen Lyons (Soprano), Suzanne Birkland (Mezzo), Leodigario del Rosario (Tenor), and Andrew Fernando (Baritone/Bass). Also featured are the fantastic forces of the Philippine Madrigal Singers (et al), the Ateneo Chamber Singers, and the AUP Ambassadors Chorale Arts Society.
